In the 1700s, European settlers began farming the fertile valley along the Roanoke River. The small farming community that developed was originally known as Big Lick, named for the area’s natural salt deposits that attracted wildlife. In 1882, Big Lick was renamed Roanoke when the railroad expanded through the valley—marking the beginning of a dramatic transformation. Roanoke originates from an Algonquian word referring to white shell beads or wampum used as currency by Native American tribes in the Virginia/North Carolina Region

Before heading home, check out Explore Park in Roanoke County.  This 1100-acre recreation facility, located at milepost 115 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, features Treetop Quest, a progressively challenging obstacle course and aerial zip lines that will provide a thrill like you’ve never experienced! Also located in the park is Mayflower Hills Disc Golf Course, an 18-hole course with varied and diverse terrain. And, this park also offers 14 miles of dual-use trails including 9 miles of purpose-built bike trails used when hosting the 2025 and 2026 USA Cycling Endurance Mountain Bike National Championships.

Continue your drive home via the beautiful, winding roads on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
